Mandela Foods Cooperative is one component of Mandela Marketplace's Food Enterprise Network that builds a local food system and entrepreneurship opportunity for residents in West Oakland, and establishes a model to catalyze a local food economy within the inner-city.
Though independently owned, Mandela Foods has a synergistic relationship with Mandela Marketplace, which serves as its entrepreneurship and food retail incubator. This innovative project developed from a community vision to address lack of access to healthy food, healthy jobs, and economic development to benefit West Oakland residents by increasing their access to healthy food, local economy, and business ownership.
Mandela Foods is a worker- and community-owned retail grocery store and nutrition education center in West Oakland that addresses economic empowerment and community health. A catalyst for change, Mandela seeks to transform a neighborhood into a dynamic, healthy and prosperous community for the benefit of residents, employees, commuters, and local farmers.
Mandela Foods sets a footprint for a culturally rich destination. It empowers residents to build a local economy, increase food access, and support family farmers and a healthier community.
